In 2008, UNDP Office in Montenegro launched the project 'Personal documentation - first step toward equality' with financial support from the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). This national project is a part of a wider regional project, managed by the UNDP Regional Centre in Bratislava.
The overall objective of the project is to reduce the poverty of Roma, Ashkali and Egyptians and foster their sustainable and greater social inclusion, better employment and development opportunities.
NGO Young Roma was a partner in the project "Assistance to Roma residents in obtaining identity documents."
From the perspective of the Roma, the administrative procedures for the issuance of identity documents are complicated and expensive. According to the findings of the NGO Young Roma, the average cost per person are 580 euros.
Supported by UNDP, Young Roma started conducting projects on personal documentation since mid-2008 until the end of 2011. In this period, the organisation obtained and funded obtaining of over 5000 different documents in the countries of origin - Serbia and Montenegro.
The project was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Internal Affairs,relevant local authorities and Roma civil society.
