Municipality of Herceg Novi and the German organization HELP will provide housing facilities for eight Roma families now living in Šištet through funds provided by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany.
Memorandum of Understanding on the project was signed by the president of the municipality Ms Natasa Acimovic, Deputy German Ambassador in Podgorica, Mr Uwe Merkotter and director of the HELP Montenegro, Mr Klaus Mok. On behalf of the Roma community, the signing of the Memorandum was attended by director of the NGO "Young Roma" Samir Jaha.
Preparation of the terrain will start immediately, while setting up prefabricated houses should be done by the end of this year. President Acimovic thanked partners on cooperation and expressed satisfaction that the eight RE families will be taken care of, whereby the Municipality showed its responsibility towards all citizens of Herceg Novi. She said that the Municipality provided the location in Drenovik, will provide the infrastructure, and after its completion, will financially help families.
Satisfaction with the realization of the project was also expressed by the Help's director Klaus Mock, who recalled that this is not the first project that the organization has being implemented in Herceg Novi. Special thanks are expressed to the German Government which provided 176,890 euros for this project. Director of the NGO "Young Roma", Samir Jaha (currently employed in Help) thanked the investors on behalf of the Roma community.
He said that the project envisages the construction of prefabricated housing units on the identified site. It is expected that preparation of the terrain will start immediately. The municipality has provided the construction site, electricity and water connection as well as the access road. Doing so will, in the words of Jaha, solve major problem for vulnerable Roma families which have been living in Šištet for several years. Along with gratitude to Help, he reminded that this organization also funds project "Enhancing the employability of Roma women in Herceg Novi", i.e. the DORRA workshop that produces unique jewelry.
