Representatives of NGO Young Roma, on 7 and 8 October 2020, visited seven Elementary Schools in Podgorica where Roma pupils attend classes.
Those schools are:
- Elementary school Božidar Vuković Podgoričanin
- Elementary school Marko Miljanov
- Elementary school Savo Pejanović
- Elementary school 21. maj
- Elementary school Vuk Karadžić
- Elementary school Vladimir Nazor
- Elementary school Oktoih
The aim of these visits was to exchange information on the current situation in the education of Roma children in the changed conditions caused by the COVID-19 virus.
On that occasion, we talked with the principals of these Schools about topics that are important for the education of Roma children, the problems they face in this current situation and possible solutions for them.
The schools pointed out the problem with the organization of transportation for pupils, ie. lack of the same, which has not been in function since the beginning of this school year, and thus caused the problems with pupils regular attendance to classes. Some of the children are brought to school by their parents, in their own vehicle or by paying a taxi. In addition, problems with transportation have been reported in regular conditions, because it happens that children wait for transportation after School, or in some Schools they have to get out of classes earlier in order not to miss the bus to return home.
The number of students in schools varies, and schools PI Elementary School ‘Bozidar Vukovic Podgoricanin’ and PI Elementary School ‘Marko Miljanov’ from Podgorica have the largest number of children from Roma population.
Classes in this school year in all Elementary schools in Montenegro are based on the principle that students from the first to the sixth grade attend school classes, while other students in the seventh, eighth and ninth grade attend online classes.
NGO Young Roma conducts mentoring activities in following Schools: PI Elementary School ‘Bozidar Vukovic Podgoricanin’, PI Elementary School ‘Marko Miljanov’, PI Elementary School ‘Savo Pejanovic’, PI Elementary School ‘21. maj’ and PI Elementary School ‘Vladimir Nazor’. Mentoring support is provided for the students in final, eighth and ninth grades, which began in previous school year, and is planned to continue during this school year.
During the visits, we distributed packages with school supplies to schools for first grade Roma students.
This activity is part of the project "Improving primary education - first step towards quality secondary education", supported by the Roma Education Fund (REF).
