Visit to Elementary Schools ‘Blazo Jokov Orlandic’ and ‘Kekec’ in Municipality of Bar – 15 October

On October 15, 2020, representatives of NGO Young Roma visited two Elementary School in Bar where classes are attended by pupils from Roma population. Also, in these schools our organization implements mentoring program for final grade Roma pupils.
These are schools:
1. Elementary school ’Blazo Jokov Orlandic’
2. Elementary school ‘Kekec’
On that occasion, we spoke with the Mr. Mustafa Perocevic, school principal in Elementary school ’Blazo Jokov Orlandic’, and with school principal in Elementary school ‘Kekec’, Mrs. Mirjana Lucic. The meetings were also attended by Ms. Vasfije Tusa, associate in social inclusion for the territory of the Municipality of Bar.
The aim of these visits was to exchange information on the current situation in the education of Roma children in the changed conditions caused by the pandemic of COVID-19 virus.
In the Municipality of Bar, there are in total 77 students from the Roma population in Elementary Schools. Elementary school ’Blazo Jokov Orlandic’ is attended by 21 student, and Elementary school ‘Kekec’ attends 23 Roma students.
For students attending the eighth and ninth grades, NGO Young Roma implements mentoring program in which engaged teachers provide support to Roma students, monitor their studding, taking into account the specific needs of students in order to improve school attendance and increase motivation to continue schooling.
During the visits, we also distributed packages with school supplies for first grade Roma students enrolled in those schools.
This activity is part of the project "Improving primary education - first step towards quality secondary education", supported by the Roma Education Fund (REF).
