Office for Roma education support opened

NGO Young Roma on Thursday, 15 October visited the Elementary School Blazo Jokov Orlandic in Bar.

Through an education support programme, school supplies for Roma pupils were delivered to this institution with the help of the Roma Education Fund. On that occasion, the office for associates in social inclusion of Roma students in education, which is equipped with the support of the ROMACTED programme, funded by the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the NGO Young Roma, officially started working.

The executive director of the NGO Young Roma, Samir Jaha, said that by opening this office, Elementary School Blazo Jokov Orlandic has confirmed the successful cooperation so far and has shown that it is willing to improve the position of Roma pupils.

- We are immensely proud that in this school and the Municipality of Bar, with which we have always cooperated well, today we open the door to our and your associate Vasfija Tusa and all Roma pupils. We wish her happy work, and pupils successful this, and all the following school years. The NGO Young Roma will be there to monitor their results and help them overcome obstacles through a mentoring programme – said Jaha.

The school principal Mustafa Perocevic thanked the Council of Europe, the Municipality of Bar, the Ministry of Education and the NGO Young Roma for the good cooperation, which resulted in the opening of a job position in February - associate in the social inclusion of Roma students in education.

- In our school, special attention is paid to the education of pupils of the Roma population. They have the support of teachers, pedagogues, psychologists, speech therapists, and now associates. They will help pupils, their families and teachers. I hope that Roma pupils will have even better success and be more regular during their schooling - said Perocevic.

Naser Kraja, independent advisor for human and minority rights and freedoms in the Municipality of Bar, thanked the school principal and said that the Municipality will continue to pay attention to the promotion of the inclusion of the Roma community, especially in the field of education.

- Since the beginning of the ROMACTED programme, the Municipality of Bar has been seriously involved in the implementation of all obligations for the promotion of the Roma community, which is very important in Bar.

We immediately started drafting and adopting the Local Action Plan for Social Inclusion of Roma and Egyptians in the Municipality of Bar 2020-2022. Today, we are happy that with joint efforts we managed to reach the realization of opening an office for Roma students. I am grateful to the director and the ROMACTED team for their cooperation - Kraja pointed out.

Associate in the social inclusion of Roma students in education Vasfija Tusa pointed out that this is an important step both for her and for her community.

I have been following 77 children since February 20th. The feeling is beautiful, I feel useful, fulfilled because I can help my Roma community to be educated, to build the future. It is much easier for the pupils to get in touch with me because I am from their community. As for the cooperation with the school, I must emphasize that I owe a great deal of gratitude to the school principal. The conditions in which I will work are excellent - said Tusa.

The NGO Young Roma also equipped the offices at the Elementary School Mileva Lajović Lalatović in Nikšić and Radomir Mitrović in Berane. All funds for office equipment are provided through the ROMACTED programme funded by the European Union, and implemented by the Council of Europe in cooperation with the NGO Young Roma.
