On February 6, 2020, representatives of the NGO "Young Roma" visited the Elementary school “Mileva Lajović Lalatović” in Nikšić, which is one of the schools included in the mentoring program and other activities foreseen by the project “Improving primary education – first step towards quality secondary education”.
There are 25 pupils in eighth and ninth grade at this school. Three students are in the ninth grade, while all others are in the eighth grade. Our organization previously engaged 7 mentrs for this pupils.
The aim of our visit was to get to know each other, talk about the course of activities, opportunities to improve our work, and also to talk about enrollment in high schools with pupils who are now in final grades.
The meeting was attended by: representatives of NGO "Young Roma", pupils, mentors, as well as the school principal, Mrs. Vera Božović.
After the introductory words by Samir Jaha, Executive Director of the organization, in which he thanked everyone for their attendance, presented further activities and invitied mentors and students to discuss their previous activities, problems they have encountered, etc., each mentor briefly presented their work with the student within the two months of engagement so far and provided commentary for their students.
Afterwards, we talked to the students about their academic performance, participation in extracurricular activities and further education.
Most students expressed their intention to continue their education (many of them intend to enroll in such directions as: car mechanic, cook, etc.).
Also, many students are involved in extracurricular activities (mostly in the choir), and one student is in the student parliament.
This activity is part of the project "Improving primary education - first step towards quality secondary education", supported by the Roma Education Fund (REF).
