After five years, in Berane, students from the Roma population will be attending high school again, in the school year 2020/2021. A total of 12 students who finished elementary school "Radomir Mitrovic" in May, decided to continue their education after elementary school. Having in mind that Berane is a second municipality with the largest number of Roma population in Montenegro, it did not have students from this community attending high school.
We believe that the reasons for this success are the intensity of work with children by the school management, the proactive approach of education associates from Roma community, dedicated work of teacher-mentors in the schools who are engaged in the program of NGO Young Roma.
During this school year, 16 students, of which 12 are in final grades of primary school, were beneficiaries of mentoring support within the project "Improving primary education - first step towards quality secondary education".
In the new school year, mentoring support for these 12 students will continue. Mentors provide support to students in the areas of work planning and learning, as well as motivation to master school materials.
The NGO Young Roma equipped a classroom with furniture and computer equipment worth 1,600 euros for the "Radomir Mitrovic" Elementary School in Berane. This school attends 140 children from the Roma community. Eight tablet devices with internet cards as an aid for distance learning, were provided for final grade students worth 600 euros.
As part of the "New Beginning for 500 Roma Students" project, our organization hired 13 field associates from the community who help children and parents with electronic enrollment in preschool, primary and secondary education.
NGO Young Roma, together with the Roma Education Fund, will continue to support Roma students, having in mind that quality education is the key to the successful integration of the Roma population into Montenegrin society.
