HERCEG NOVI: Meeting with principals

NGO Young Roma organized a meeting with school principals and educators from Herceg Novog on 12 September in order to improve the program  "Education to integration" targeted at Roma children.

The meeting was attended by Đorđije Radović, principal of elementary school "Ilija Kišić" - Zelenika, Jarmila Radović, principal of elementary school "Orjenski bataljon" - Bijela, Gordana Mićunović educator at elementary school "Milan Vukovic" - Herceg Novi, Tamara Vlaović, director of the Centre for Social Work, Vesna Mišeljić, social worker, Senka Domović Bulut, project assistant, Sanja Knezević, project coordinator and Jaha Samir, executive director of the NGO Young Roma.

Conclusions from the meeting: 

• Free textbooks for Roma children have not yet arrived; they are expected by 25 September; It was agreed that until then, teachers shall apply a more tolerant attitude towards pupils who still do not have textbooks.
• It is necessary to attain a higher level of communication and information exchange between NGO "Young Roma" and subject teachers / educators / psychologists; program will be administratively promoted through weekly and monthly reports by the assistants and coordinators.
• NGO "Young Roma" took over the responsibility to provide schools with individual records which contain information about the children who attended the program during the academic year 2013/14.
• Prinicipal of Elementary School in Zelenika suggested using the space of special school unit of Kumbor as space for taking additional classes with Romani children. It was agreed that during the next week, the team will visit this area and assess the conditions and possibilities of teaching.
• This is the first meeting within this school year with representatives of primary schools, from which all concluded there is a need for more frequent communication between all stakeholders in order to improve the program of education of Romani children. Young Roma activists are of the opinion that meetings with school principals must become a regular activity of the organization.
