President of the Association of refugees and displaced persons in Montenegro Mico Marjanovic, said the largest number of that population in Berane lives in conditions bellow the poverty line. On the occasion of the World Day against poverty and social exclusion, he said it is necessary to take urgent measures to alleviate the difficult situation.
"The largest number of refugees and displaced persons in Berane and at the north of Montenegro cannot even afford for bread. It is a condition that can not be defined by the existing parameters of poverty. It is pure misery", said Marjanovic.
He said that conditions for opening public kitchen for refugees and displaced persons in the north were met long time ago.
"We have previously taken the initiative to open the kitchen in Berane, where most refugees and displaced persons live. We approached the UNHCR, but we have not received an answer", said Marjanovic.
There are still about 3,500 displaced persons from the former Yugoslavia in Berane. That's about 10 percent of the total population in this city. Most of them are located in the collective centers.
"Particularly difficult situation is recorded in the villages of Riverside where Roma and Egyptians live", said Marjanovic.
He recalled that the displaced persons in collective centers are faced with the problem of power cuts due to accumulated debts, which only in Berane reachs the figure of 260,000 euros.
"A large number of households is in the dark for a month, now. Now Elektroprivreda threatens with new power cuts. I think it's not good way and it might be the initial trigger for the protest gatherings of refugees and displaced people", said Marjanovic.
"Vijesti earlier wrote that collective centers in four municipalities in the northeast of the state owe 680,000 euros for electricity bills since 2011. President of the Association of refugees and displaced persons in Montenegro, Mico Marjanovic, said that the largest number of this population in Berane live in substandard conditions of all parameters of poverty.
