NGO Young Roma celebrates 10th anniversary [Vijesti]

Young Roma organised solemn ceremony to celebrate ten years of work. Except in Herceg Novi, this NGO has an office in Podgorica. Executive Director Samir Jaha recalled that the NGO Young Roma was founded with the aim to improve the situation of Roma and to serve as a bridge of dialogue, understanding, identifying and solving problems and needs of the Roma community.
There are 300 inhabitants of the Roma population in Herceg Novi live, and about 600 of them at the temporary work abroad.
Vicepresident of the Municipality, Tamara Vujovic, said that the housing issues, the lack of personal documentation, prejudice of the local population, forgetting the customs and traditions are the most common problems faced by Roma in Herceg Novi.
She positively assessed efforts made for the inclusion of Roma children in primary and secondary education.
Senior Political Advisor to the OSCE Mission in Montenegro, Alyn Roberts, said that Roma and Egyptians are part of the most vulnerable and marginalized communities in Montenegro.
He recalled the support of the Mission during the past three years through the work of Roma assistants in primary schools in Herceg Novi. He said that OSCE will continue to work to increase awareness among parents about the importance of education.

Only a third of Roma has permanent jobs
There are 254 Roma and 25 Egyptians living in Herceg Novi. One third of the Roma population or 14 families live in extreme poverty. Half of the population said their residential status is intolerable and poor, according to a Local housing study of the Roma and Egyptian population in the municipality of Herceg Novi.
Only a third of Roma and Egyptian population have permanent jobs and generates a monthly income of 100 to 300 euros, but the majority makes a living by doing seasonal jobs or collecting and selling secondary raw materials.
About 10 % of Roma from this city depends on begging and the help of others live. This research, carried out by the NGO Young Roma in cooperation with the Center for Democracy and Human Rights and the Municipality of Herceg Novi, showed that Roma live in extremely difficult and poor conditions.
