Visited 7 high schools in Podgorica in beginning of November

Representatives of the NGO Young Roma are, in the period from 2 to 16 November 2020, visited high schools in the Municipality of Podgorica, in which Roma students where attended classes and where we implement a mentoring support program.

On that occasion, we held meetings with the school management, mentors and discussed the situation with attending and organizing classes this school year, given that there has been a change in the way classes are implemented due to the Covid-19 virus pandemic.

The schools we visited are:

  2. Medical High School
  3. Secondary vocational school ‘Spasoje Raspopovic’
  4. Secondary School of Civil Engineering and Geodesy ‘Eng. Marko Radevic’
  5. Secondary School of Economics ‘Mirko Vesovic’
  6. Secondary vocational school ‘Sergije Stanic’
  7. Resource Center for Education ‘1 June’

We also discussed topics related to the regularity of scholarships for high school students, selection and reporting of mentors/teachers, the regularity of students, monitoring of classes online, the consequences of Covid-19 virus on students from the Roma population, integration of Roma students in the school system, practical classes and importance and improvement of support by mentors.

The number of students varies from school to school. This school year, the number of students who enrolled in the first grade of high school has increased. Most first graders are in the school ‘Ivan Uskokovic’, a fourteen, in total, in the fields of a car mechanic, the installer for forwarding, customs and organization of transport, installer of sanitary devices, heating and air conditioning, while the total number of high school students at the level of Podgorica is sixty. The number of mentors hired to provide support to RE students at the Podgorica level is nineteen.
