US Ambassador’s visit to NGO Young Roma

It is our pleasure to inform the public that on June 28th, 2017 US Ambassador to Montenegro, Ms. Margaret En Uehara, visited the NGO Young Roma office and the workshop venue where the activities of the Dorra Nuova project are being implemented.

The project team introduced Ambassador Uehara with the project "Increasing the employability of long-term unemployed women - Dorra Nuova" and its goals. During the visit, the activities that were implemented in the past six months, as well as those to follow, were also discussed. Ambassador Margaret En Uehara, honored the idea of the project, and she expressed satisfaction that the project's objectives are already being realized, especially in the part of the inclusion of Romani women. Visibly delighted with the jewelry and handicrafts produced by the beneficiaries of the project, they took the opportunity to address positive comments and purchase some of the exhibited copies, thus encouraging women to continue with creative work.

NGO Young Roma launched in November 2016 a project aimed at increasing the employability of long term unemployed women - Dorra Nouva. The project is supported by the European Union funds through the grant scheme "Young, Women and Long-term Unemployed in the Labor Market", which is realized within the Operational Program "Human Resources Development 2012-2013", financed by the Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA). The implementation contract was signed with the Ministry of Finance - the Directorate for Financing and Contracting EU Assistance. The Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare is the institution in charge of monitoring the implementation of this project, but also the entire grant scheme.

The main objective of the project is to contribute to the improvement of the economic and social rights of Roma women and other long-term unemployed women through inclusion in the labor market. The project contributes to the increased possibilities of their employment and self-employment, which is ensured through a series of trainings, workshops, building partnerships, as well as cooperation with relevant organizations and institutions.

Of the total of 26 beneficiaries involved in the project, 15 are Roma women and 11 beneficiaries are from the majority community. Most of the participants are from Herceg Novi, two participants from Kotor and two from Tivat. Through this project, ZOPT experts - the Center for Education and Training from Podgorica, transferred their knowledge to women in the field of jewelry and handicrafts, financial management and administration, management and marketing. After completing the training in these areas, project participants continued with practical training for a period of six months. In this way, they will have the opportunity to transfer the acquired knowledge and skills into unique jewelry and handicrafts that will find their place at fairs and festivals, as well as promotional stands in Herceg Novi, Kotor and Tivat.

In addition to this project, the NGO Youth Roma, in cooperation with the Union of Free Trade Unions, has started a project funded by IPA EU funds, which aims to contribute to inclusion in the labor market and create better working conditions for members of the Roma population engaged in the collection of secondary raw materials in Boka Kotorska. This will contribute to the strengthening of the capacity of one of the most vulnerable groups of unemployed persons belonging to the Roma minority community and will offer sustainable solutions and mechanisms for this purpose. The specific objective of this project is to improve the protection of the rights of workers and the productivity of Roma and non-Roma who are engaged in the collection of secondary raw materials through capacity building and association.
