NGOs Young Roma and Human Rights Action welcome the action of the Municipality of Herceg Novi and the German NGO HELP, which will jointly provide housing solutions for six Roma families living in makeshift facilities in Šištet in Igalo.
The municipality has provided three land plots with utility connection, where HELP will provide finance for the construction of prefabricated houses for three out of the six families. We hope that soon suitable locations for the remaining three vulnerable families will be found.
These families currently live on the land owned by the Institute Dr Simo Milosevic, which filed a lawsuit for their eviction in June last year.
The joint action of local government, with the support of HELP and the NGO Young Roma prevented that 23 people, of whom eleven children, end up in the street.
After successfully found solution for eight vulnerable families from Zverinjak in Niksic at the beginning of this year, another local government has continued the practice of respect for the rights to adequate housing guaranteed by the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, under which Montenegro obliged to provide alternative accommodation for people, who are in risk of homelessness, due to eviction.
We will continue to advocate for systematization of this good practice at the state level, and in all local governments.
