Strengthening capacities of Roma for public activism – United we reach more!

National Strategy for improving the position of Roma and Egyptians 2012 – 2016 and supporting action plans at national and local level embrace the stance that improvement of position of Roma population is hardly achievable without their appropriate participation in public life.

Although it is certain that the political and trade union involvement can improve the economic, social and educational status of minority communities, Roma are yet still largely excluded from equal participation in public affairs (res publica).

The proposed action, hence, aims at strengthening capacities of Roma representatives to engage in public life of MNE and advocate for protection of their rights. Specific objectives are, as follows: 1) Improved knowledge of Roma representatives to take part in shaping the political and public life of MNE; 2): Institutionalised mechanisms for protection of economic and social rights of Roma and non-Roma workers on maintenance of city cleanliness.

The main activities envisaged by this action are organizing trainings for Roma activists on human rights advocacy, the political system of Montenegro, public policy and public relations. In addition, training for workers on maintenance of city cleanliness on unionisation will be organised.

The project duration is 15 months, starting from February 1, 2016.

The project is implemented in partnership with the Union of Free Trade Unions of Montenegro and the NGO Coalition Roma Circle. It is supported by the European Commission through the EU Delegation in Montenegro.
